Déjà Vu

Has it really been a year since the last JavaOne? It seems like yesterday that I was watching James Gosling launch T-shirts into the audience using a trebuchet! What a year it has been. Who would have thought that Microsoft and Sun would come to the agreement they did? Those of us watching the JBoss saga were relieved when an agreement halted overt hostilities on that front.

Where Is Open Source in the App Server Surveys?

Just recently Gartner reported that IBM has overtaken BEA in application server market share. The interesting thing is that Gartner's expression of market share is in a single number, dollars. While dollars are certainly an important factor in declaring a market leader, is this an accurate measure of market lead? If it is, where does that leave open source offerings such as Jonas and JBoss?

All's Quiet on the West Coast

It was April 2, when I first heard the news that Sun and Microsoft had reached a settlement on their long-standing dispute over Java. When I first saw the headline, I honestly thought it was a leftover April Fool's joke, so I ignored it. It was only when I saw the words 'Microsoft and Sun settle' in the CNN news banner running across the bottom of my TV screen that I came to realize that this was not a joke!

The Commercialization of Open Source

We've all heard the news: JBoss has received $10 million in funding and now it's time to sit back and mull it over. Without a doubt this infusion of capital is a signal of confidence for JBoss Group. But is this investment a good thing for open source? Not an unimportant question for those of us who have decided to use open source in our enterprise applications.

JDJ Meets Sun's JCP 2.6 Maestro, Aaron Williams

'We want to involve more people sooner,' says Sun's Aaron Williams, as Sun launches JCP 2.6. JDJ's enterprise editor Kirk Pepperdine talks with Williams about his passionate belief that transparency will help demystify the process by which JSRs move through the various stages of their life-cycle.

Yet Another IDE War

Well, you may have seen the Java Industry Newsletter's hot story, 'Eclipse versus NetBeans.' As an editor of this fine publication, it's my privilege to see all of our feedback arriving at my inbox. My first reaction was, oh please, not another IDE war. But I dutifully suppressed the urge to delete the e-mails and started to read them.

No Fluff, Just Stuff: A Just In Time Conference

Last year I was introduced to the No Fluff, Just Stuff (NFJS) Software symposium in Atlanta. It was a high-quality experience in every aspect. The speakers delivered more than technical information, they delivered an insight into what was happening in our industry.

Our Roots

Do you enjoy history? I do. In fact, I've always enjoyed history for I've always found that understanding the past has been useful in helping me to understand the here and now. Part of my here and now is the taking on of the role of enterprise editor.

WebLogic JRockit 8.1 by BEA Systems

The JRockit engineers made two assumptions when they first designed JRockit. First, server VMs run for a long time and, second, memory is cheap and plentiful.

Customizing Ant

You have a task that your Ant build process needs to perform and none of the built-in or dozens of optional tasks fits the bill. If at this point you're thinking that Ant won't work for you, then the authors of Ant have some wonderful news. The framework they use to run built-in tasks is also available for your own task.

Unleashing Tiger

Up till now, changes to Java have been pretty much constrained to APIs and the inner workings of the Java 2 platform. All of this will change once the JDK 1.5 has been released. The extent of these changes was revealed in a recent interview with Joshua Bloch.

A Multiple Application Launcher

By necessity, the operating system loads each VM into its own separate process slot. Consequently, each VM is forced to duplicate the other's initialization efforts and resource allocations. Specifically, each VM is required to load the JDK core classes into their respective heap spaces.

JCP 2.6 to "Open Up the Process"

(May 29, 2003) - Late last week, Sun Microsystems started briefing everyone on the changes that will be implemented in version 2.6 of the JCP. In this revised version of the JCP are plans to increase both the transparency and the level of involvement in the process. 'We want to make the process more transparent' stated Aaron Williams of Sun Microsystems, the Spec Lead for JSR 215.
